Exhibit Design

The Bakken Museum wanted to bridge their galleries and their gardens with an exhibit about medicinal plants. It’s a topic that spans the globe and all of human history, so part of my job was to help them get out of the weeds and find engaging ways for visitors to access all that content.

Our pill-shaped title graphic encapsulates the subject of the exhibit by pairing a vintage plant illustration with contemporary typography printed on a translucent layer of acrylic.

WE ADDED DEPTH to this wall-mounted exhibit by printing on the fronts and backs of transparent panels. We cut holes in some pieces and layered clear acrylic atop others. It was important to connect the exhibit to the adjacent gardens, so we incorporated a live plant which “grows” out of a block of fake dirt.

A hands-on medicine cabinet with props designed to look like familiar products encourages visitors to match the products to their plant origins. A large panel surrounding the cabinet allowed us to display the vastness of plant-derived medicines in a graphic way.
